The man was Scott Kelly, and with his Russian counterpart, Mikhail Kornienko, he spent a total of 340 days living in space as part of NASA's first attempt to understand how such long stints. Dozens of possible menu items range from meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy to coconut cream pie. Dehydrated foods are still used, as are foods that are thermostabilized or irradiated and can be served right out of the package – just heat and eat. space food almost exclusively uses the same kind of packaging used for the military’s Meals, Ready to Eat (MRE) kits, or the room-temperature tuna pouches you can buy in a grocery store. Food could be kept in special plastic zip-closure containers, and its moisture allowed it to stick to a spoon. On April 30, 2001, US millionaire Dennis Tito arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) via a Russian Soyuz rocket, becoming the world’s first space tourist. In all, seven space tourists have taken Russian flights to the ISS. He pays Russia 20 million to stay on the ISS for eight days. The “spoon-bowl” allowed more normal eating practices. The first man in space, Gagarin was chosen from 3,000 candidates. On February 20, 1962, Glenn flew the Friendship 7 mission, becoming the first American to orbit the Earth, and the fifth person and third American in space. The new availability of hot water made rehydrating freeze-dried foods simpler, and produced a more appetizing result. The variety of food options continued to expand for the Apollo missions. For Project Gemini during the mid-1960s, improved freeze-drying methods permitted luxuries such as shrimp cocktail, toast, chicken and vegetables and pudding. The early Mercury astronauts took along freeze-dried food in powdered form and bite-sized cubes, which they did not enjoy trying to rehydrate and eat.Įventually, tubes were ousted and menus started consisting of more normal food items that humans enjoy.
